UNitO 2007 Winners
Dear teachers,
I am writing to communicate the results of the UNitO competition held on Saturday (Sep. 29).
33 students from 8 local high schools took the test. Since UNitO is similar in spirit to the AMC 12 exam, it is quite a demanding exam and even a modest score represents a significant achievement. At 30 questions worth 6 points each, the range of scores is 0-180. The mean score in UNitO was 88.3 with a standard deviation of ±26 points. (For specific score requests, contact Wanda Crotty wanda.crotty@utsa.edu). We are very pleased with this level of performance by student contestants.
- Zeshum Ahmed from DATA (Design and Technology Academy, NEISD) is the overall winner and will receive a "Numero UNO" award (book bundle, plus MAA membership, plus "Crux Mathematicorum" subscription).
- Ruoheng Zhang from Sandra Day O'Connor HS will receive an honorable mention on account of her very distinguished performance.
- Derek Oudie, also from DATA, will be awarded a UNO SUMMA award to recognize superior performance by an individual of underrepresented minority background. (Book bundle, plus MAA membership, plus "Crux Mathematicorum" subscription.)
The "UNA Escuela" school award is decided by adding the scores of the top three students from a single school (schools entering fewer than three students are ineligible for the "UNA Escuela" award). This award consists of a certificate of recognition for the school, and a book bundle to be given to a student of the school's choosing (except graduating seniors), of underrepresented minority background, in recognition of his/her academic achievement in math. (For instance, this prize can be given to a junior as part of the school's spring awards ceremony.)
The UNA Escuela award will go to the team of O'Connor HS. Its team members (Ruoheng Zhang, Adam Ionescu, Rebecca Bogue) will each receive a "UN Equipo" (team) certificate of recognition and a book.
Last, but not least, the UN Maestro teacher award goes to Tony Potter, the leader of the O'Connor team; additionally, certificates of appreciation will go to Amanda Thoms from Clark HS, Sarah Flores from Alamo Heights HS, and Louis Sifuentes from Cole HS (whose teams also had very remarkable performances in UNitO—the UNA Escuela award was an extremely close contest).
We wish to remind everyone involved in UNitO that the awards ceremony will be held this Saturday 6 October at 11 AM at the UTSA 1604 campus in room BSE 2.102 (Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering building), and extend everyone, whether a formal winner or not, an enthusiastic invitation to attend.
The UTSA Mathematics Department wishes to extend all UNitO contestants and their teacher leaders its appreciation for helping make UNitO a success.
Finally, I would like to request the assistance of teacher leaders in passing along this information to their students—I will appreciate your replies acknowledging receipt of this message.
Sincerely,
Dr. Eduardo Dueñez
Assistant Professor of Mathematics
