We begin with a brief history of mathematical models for surface water waves.
A few important points from recent research will be brought forth to
indicate how much confidence these models deserve.
The discussion will then turn to some recent applications of water wave models,
including tsunami propagation, rogue waves and near shore zone sediment
transport, as time permits.
